THE PRACTICAL GUIDES
Melbourne Zoo or Werribee with kids: tickets, safari and timing
Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo share an operator and similar admission categories, but the day's plan can be quite different. Choose around the experience your family most wants, the children's ages and the time you can arrive. A free child ticket or included safari still needs a workable schedule.
This comparison uses current Zoos Victoria information for the two existing directory listings. It is not a review of personal visits. Browse family attractions for the wider inventory, or use farm visits when you want an outing centred on farm activities instead.
Choose the part of the day you most want to protect
| Choice | Useful planning resource | Decision for the family |
|---|---|---|
| Melbourne Zoo, Parkville | A zoo map, sensory map, social script and detailed Access Key. | Pick a manageable route and identify places to pause rather than promising to see everything. |
| Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee South | An included safari bus with a separate departure schedule, plus walking areas and play spaces. | Leave time for the bus you want and confirm any accessible seating on arrival. |
Compare the date and ages before comparing totals
The Melbourne prices and Werribee prices both advertise adult entry from A$58. Children aged 0–3 enter free. For ages 4–15, ordinary weekday entry is advertised at A$29, while weekends, Victorian Government school holidays and public holidays have free child entry.
The ticket information requires children to be accompanied by an adult or someone aged 16 or over. Select the actual date and enter every visitor's category, including free children. Do not assume a school holiday in another state qualifies for Victoria's school-holiday arrangement.
For an illustrative family of two adults and children aged three, seven and twelve, using the published adult starting price:
- Ordinary weekday: 2 × A$58 plus 2 × A$29, with the three-year-old free, gives A$174.
- Eligible free-child day: 2 × A$58 gives A$116 for the same family.
- Difference: A$58 before parking, travel, food or optional experiences.
These are calculations from advertised rates, not a dated booking quote. Adult prices start at the stated amount, so check the selected date's total. A birthday-party package is another product; the Melbourne Zoo profile's separately labelled party price is not general admission.
At Werribee, protect the safari time
The standard safari bus is included in admission and suitable for all ages. The published service has regular daily departures until 3.30pm, subject to change. Check the station or ticket office when you arrive. Zoo closing time does not establish the last bus departure.
There is also a distinct 30-minute Junior Safari for ages 0–6 with a supervising adult, on weekdays outside school and public holidays. On review, its listed October departure was 9.50am, boarding at 9.40am. A new timetable starts on 4 November 2026, listing 10am and 10.40am departures. Use the schedule for your visit date, rather than mixing the future times into an October plan.
The Junior Safari does not take reservations; the operator asks families to arrive early. Its timing and age band will not suit every mixed-age group. The standard all-ages service remains a separate choice. A paid safari experience is also a different product, so read the selected ticket carefully.
Use the access resources to plan a realistic route
Melbourne Zoo's accessibility page links its sensory map, social script and Access Key. Use those resources to discuss the entrance, route and likely stopping points with your family before leaving. They provide a more specific starting point than a general “family-friendly” description.
Werribee's accessibility information distinguishes its wheelchair-accessible standard safari buses from the paid Deluxe Safari's transfer requirement. Standard accessible buses accommodate two standard wheelchairs or one electric wheelchair per vehicle; speak to station staff about an accessible seat. That capacity statement is not a reservation or a guarantee of the next departure.
Both access pages describe weekday afternoons, 3–4.30pm, as typically quieter. A late quieter visit and a Werribee safari can compete for the same time: arriving close to 3.30pm leaves little margin for the published final departures. Choose which matters most, and confirm that day's operation.
Book a day you can actually use
Before choosing, record travel and arrival time, the main experience, a meal or rest break, any access arrangements and a practical leaving time. Compare the complete ticket basket for that date. If a membership is tempting, its monthly payment is a 12-month arrangement, not a casual one-month pass; check the current membership terms and the number of visits you realistically expect.
